How to Upgrade Your Zoho Creator Account to C6

This article covers how to upgrade a Zoho Creator account to the latest version, C6, along with the issues you might run into along the way and how to resolve them.

Attention: The upgrade to C6 is irreversible. Once an account has been upgraded, it is not possible to revert back to C5.

Who can upgrade to C6

  • Both free and paid C5 plans can move to C6. A free C5 plan becomes a C6 trial, and once the trial ends you will need to move onto a paid C6 subscription plan.
  • A paid C5 account can only upgrade if it is on one of the currently supported C5 subscription plans. If it is not, you will need to move to a supported C5 plan first, before upgrading to C6.
  • Only the super admin of the account can carry out the upgrade to C6.

How the upgrade process works

Before you can complete the upgrade, Zoho checks your account against two types of issue. Hindrances, such as an outdated pricing plan or the use of the old sharing method, can stop your account being eligible to upgrade at all. Dependencies are issues that only appear once you are eligible, and which need to be resolved before the upgrade can be finished.

Steps to upgrade your Creator account

  1. Open Account Setup. On the Zoho Creator homepage, click the Setup icon in the top right corner to open the Account Setup page.
  2. Go to Workspaces. Under the General section, click Workspaces to see a list of your workspaces.
  3. Start the self-upgrade. Click Update to New Creator, shown on the right of your workspace, to begin the process.
  4. Resolve any dependencies shown. On the upgrade screen, click Resolve next to any dependency listed, and carry out the action required to clear it.
  5. Click Upgrade. This button becomes available in the upgrade pop-up once every dependency has been resolved.
  6. Confirm and finish. Click Finish in the final pop-up to confirm. Your account will be upgraded and you will be redirected into Creator 6.
Note: Where a Download link is shown alongside a hindrance or dependency pop-up, it lets you download the data related to that issue, which is worth keeping for backup or future reference before you resolve it.

Hindrances that can make an account ineligible

If your account is not eligible to upgrade, you will see a pop-up explaining why. The two most common causes are:

  • Old pricing. Your C4 or C5 account may still be on a pricing plan drawn up when the account was first created. Since pricing plans are updated periodically, you will need to contact the Creator Support team at support@zohocreator.com to move onto a current plan for your version, before self-upgrading to a C6 subscription plan.
  • Old sharing. Some applications in your C5 account may still use the older C4 sharing method, which lets individual components be shared directly with users. These configurations cannot currently be migrated to the newer sharing method used in C5 and C6, which is based on permission sets and roles. To become eligible, you will need to manually delete the old C4 sharing settings from every application that uses them.

Dependencies to resolve before upgrading

Once your account is eligible, a number of further issues may still need to be cleared before the upgrade can complete:

  • Users with account-level permissions. C6 does not recognise the C5 account-level permissions Create Application, Account Setup, and Subscription. These permissions need to be revoked from any users who hold them before proceeding.
  • Inactive users in applications. Deactivated users cannot be migrated to C6, so any inactive users present in your applications need to be deleted first.
  • Group sharing in applications. Groups and group-based application sharing are not supported in C6, so group sharing needs to be removed from your applications.
  • Domain sharing in applications. Sharing an application with an entire domain is not available in C6, so domain sharing needs to be deleted from your applications.
  • Sandbox enabled in applications. Sandbox changes cannot be carried across during the upgrade. Where Sandbox is enabled, you will need to either publish all pending changes first or delete Sandbox for the affected applications.
  • Yearly backup schedules. Yearly backup schedules are not available in C6, so any scheduled yearly backups need to be deleted.
  • Payment configuration in forms. Older C4-style payment configurations built into the form builder are deprecated, and applications using them cannot be added to environments. This configuration needs to be removed before the upgrade can proceed.

One more thing to be aware of

Applications that were created by other users in your account are moved under the super admin's organisation in C6, with the original user added to the live mode of that application's new version.
