Small mismatches when reconciling a foreign currency invoice against your bank statement in Zoho Books are usually caused by rounding, not by the underlying transaction being wrong. This remains a genuinely common issue, and Zoho supports up to 6 decimal places for exchange rates, but even that precision doesn't eliminate rounding differences entirely for every currency pair.

Why the Mismatch Happens

If your currency's decimal place settings differ from the precision of the exchange rate being applied, the converted amount can come out fractionally different from the actual amount that cleared on your bank statement. For example, an invoice for 1,754.32 converted using an exchange rate carrying several decimal places might resolve to 1,754.321 rather than exactly 1,754.32, which is enough to prevent the transaction from auto-matching during reconciliation. This effect is more pronounced with currency pairs that have a large numeric difference in value, such as converting into a currency with a much smaller or much larger unit value.

Ways to Handle This

1. Align decimal places across currencies

Using the same number of decimal places for both your base currency and the foreign currency involved reduces how often small mismatches occur. This is configured under Settings, then Setup and Configurations, then Currencies, by editing the relevant currency's format.

2. Use Base Currency Adjustments for larger movements

If the difference is genuinely due to exchange rate fluctuation between when an invoice was raised and when it was paid, rather than a rounding artefact, Zoho Books' Base Currency Adjustment feature under Accountant, then Currency Adjustments, lets you record the profit or loss from that rate movement against open transactions properly, rather than forcing a manual workaround.

3. Handle tiny rounding differences with a small manual journal

For genuinely trivial differences, such as a one or two pence gap caused by your bank's own FX rounding rather than Zoho's calculation, a small manual journal entry against the Exchange Gain or Loss account is a commonly used approach to force the reconciliation to balance cleanly, while keeping an accurate audit trail of why the adjustment was made.
