Zoho CPaaS has an unusually long history for what looks, on the surface, like a brand-new product. It's actually the third name for the same underlying transactional communication infrastructure, evolving from an internal Zoho tool into a full multi-channel communication platform over roughly seven years.
Before it was ever offered publicly, this transactional email infrastructure had already been in use internally within Zoho for close to half a decade, quietly handling transactional email, such as password resets and order confirmations, for Zoho's own applications.
In 2020, Zoho Mail publicly launched this internal infrastructure as TransMail, a dedicated transactional email sending service. The reasoning behind launching it was straightforward: many businesses were struggling to reliably deliver transactional emails, automated, often time-sensitive messages like order confirmations and OTPs, and needed a service genuinely built for that specific job, separate from general business email. TransMail's core pitch was that by never sending marketing email, it preserved the sender reputation of its shared IPs, keeping deliverability high specifically for the transactional messages businesses couldn't afford to have blocked or delayed.
Roughly five months after TransMail's public launch, Zoho renamed it ZeptoMail. Zoho's own explanation was that TransMail had grown from an internal tool into a genuine, up-and-coming competitor in the transactional email market, and the team wanted a name that felt less purely technical and more aspirational. The name ZeptoMail comes from "zeptosecond," the shortest unit of time ever measured by science (a trillionth of a billionth of a second), chosen to symbolise the speed the service aimed to deliver, even though Zoho was explicit that actual zeptosecond delivery remained a scientific impossibility. Beyond the name, nothing else changed for existing users at the time; no reconfiguration was needed, pricing stayed the same, and the product interface simply began reflecting the new name over the following days.
Most recently, ZeptoMail has evolved into Zoho CPaaS (Communication Platform as a Service), expanding from a single-channel transactional email service into a full four-channel platform covering Email, SMS, WhatsApp, and Voice, on the same proven delivery infrastructure. As with the TransMail-to-ZeptoMail rename, existing users aren't required to reconfigure anything; SMTP credentials, API tokens, sending domains, Agents, and suppression lists all carry forward unchanged.
Each rename has tracked a genuine expansion in scope, not just a marketing refresh: internal tool to public single-channel product (TransMail), single-channel product finding its market identity (ZeptoMail), and single-channel product becoming a genuine multi-channel platform (Zoho CPaaS). Each transition has also consistently preserved existing customer configurations without requiring migration work, a pattern worth expecting to continue if the platform expands further.
