Channels in Zoho Cliq are a structured method for collaboration and communication, both within and outside your organisation. They function like an enhanced group chat, with a defined structure of roles and permissions rather than a flat, unmanaged conversation.
What Channels Are Good For
- Creating a dedicated channel per team, rather than relying on scattered email threads for ongoing collaboration
- An announcement-only channel open to everyone, for broadcasting company-wide news and updates
- Bringing external vendors, partners, or prospective customers into a channel to discuss business directly
Capacity
Zoho Cliq channels can support up to 1,500 users, and an organisation can create any number of channels.
A known limit: Team-based channels, which link a channel to specific departments, groups, or teams, currently support a maximum of four such associations per channel. Users have raised this as a limitation for organisations with more complex structures, so if this affects you, it's worth checking current Zoho Cliq documentation to see whether this limit has since changed.
Channel Permissions
Permissions control who can edit channel information, add participants, host group calls, change the channel type, and more, giving structure and clarity to how a channel is actually managed.
Roles vs. Policies
Beyond individual channel permissions, Zoho Cliq lets admins group users into Roles, giving distinct access to different features across the whole platform, not just one channel. Every organisation has two default roles, Admin and Member, and custom roles can be created for specific groups, such as Extension Developers, who need access to features other roles don't.
Important governance detail: Organisation-wide Policies override Role-based permissions. For example, if a policy disables the ability for users to create organisation-level channels without approval, that restriction applies even if the relevant Role has that permission enabled. When troubleshooting unexpected permission behaviour, always check Policies first, since they take precedence over whatever a Role allows.
Managing Channels via the API
Zoho Cliq's REST API supports creating, listing, and deleting channels, updating a member's role within a channel, and removing members, all with their own OAuth scopes and per-minute rate limits, useful if you're managing channels programmatically at scale.
