Quota-based commissions reward partners for progress towards a predefined target, or quota, within a set period. Unlike transaction-based commissions, which reward each transaction individually, they evaluate a partner's cumulative performance over time. That encourages partners to focus on long-term growth and sustained revenue.
How They Work
A quota is the target value a partner is expected to achieve in a commission period. As qualifying transactions accumulate, progress towards the quota is tracked. When the period ends, commission is calculated from the partner's quota attainment and the commission structure set in the plan.
Quota Attainment
Attainment shows how much of the target a partner has achieved: achieved value divided by quota value, multiplied by 100.
| Quota | Achieved | Attainment |
|---|
| $100,000 | $50,000 | 50% |
| $100,000 | $100,000 | 100% |
| $100,000 | $150,000 | 150% |
Why Use Them
- Encourage sustained partner performance.
- Reward long-term revenue generation.
- Align partner incentives with business growth.
- Motivate partners to exceed targets.
Quota-Based or Transaction-Based?
| Transaction-based | Quota-based |
|---|
| Evaluates individual transactions | Evaluates cumulative performance |
| Commission calculated per qualifying transaction | Commission calculated from quota attainment |
| Suits short sales cycles | Suits long-term performance goals |
| Focuses on individual outcomes | Focuses on overall contribution |
If a partner closes ten transactions worth $10,000 each in a quarter, a transaction-based plan pays commission on each one individually. A quota-based plan adds up the quarter's revenue, measures it against the partner's quota, and calculates commission from the overall attainment.
Calculation Models
- Line item. Individual products or services each contribute towards the quota independently, useful when products carry different commission values or you need product-level tracking. For example, Product A at $40,000, Product B at $30,000, and Product C at $20,000 each contribute separately.
- Total amount. The combined value of all qualifying transactions is used, useful when commission is based on overall revenue. For example, three transactions of $25,000, $35,000, and $40,000 contribute $100,000 towards the quota.
When setting one up: in the plan, the quota target is based on total amount, which is the only option, and the commission value type is a percentage of quota accrued. Adjustments after the fact, such as cancelled orders, change the recipient's attained quota. See the discrepancy and clawback guide below.
Choosing the Right Approach
- Use quota-based when partners are expected to hit revenue targets over time, long-term performance matters more than single deals, and the programme is meant to encourage continuous growth.
- Use transaction-based when every qualifying transaction should be rewarded straight away, transaction values vary a lot, or individual deals matter more than cumulative performance.
