Zoho to Office 365 Integration Failing: Entra Admin Consent

Zoho to Office 365 Integration Issues

If you are trying to connect a Zoho application to your Microsoft 365 environment and the sign-in fails with a Microsoft prompt asking you to "explain the reason" for the request before it stops, this is almost always caused by the admin consent settings on your Microsoft Entra ID tenant (formerly known as Azure AD), rather than anything in the standard Microsoft 365 admin centre. This applies whichever Zoho application you are connecting, whether that's Zoho CRM, Zoho Bookings, Zoho Mail, or another Zoho service that signs in with a Microsoft account.

Note: The checks below need to be carried out by someone with the Global Administrator role, or an equivalent privileged role, in Microsoft Entra ID.

1. Check whether user consent is restricted

In the Microsoft Entra admin centre, go to Entra ID, then Enterprise Applications, then Consent and Permissions, then Admin Consent Settings. Confirm whether user consent is currently restricted for your tenant. If it is, individual users will not be able to approve the Zoho application's connection themselves, and this is often what triggers the "explain the reason" prompt.

2. Look for a pending admin consent request

Go to Entra ID, then Enterprise Applications, then Activity, then Admin Consent Requests. If a request for the relevant Zoho application is sitting here, it will need to be reviewed and approved before the integration can proceed.

3. Grant admin consent tenant-wide

If the Zoho application already appears under Enterprise Applications, open its API Permissions page and select Grant Admin Consent for [Your Organisation]. This applies the permissions across the whole tenant, rather than just to whichever admin account approved it initially.

Note: This step is easy to miss, and skipping it is a common reason an integration keeps failing even after what looked like a successful initial approval.

4. Check whether user assignment is required

Some tenants are configured to require user assignment for enterprise applications. If this is set for the Zoho application in question, each user who needs to use the integration will also need to be explicitly assigned to it, on top of the tenant-wide consent granted above.
