There are now several ways to bring AI into your Zoho work, and the choice affects cost, security, and how much real work gets done. This article sets out how we think about it and why Claude is our recommended default. It stays deliberately free of model names and version numbers, so it should remain true as the products change.
Our position, stated plainly: 1 Cloud Consultants is heavily invested in Claude and uses it as the default for the Zoho work we do for customers. This is our professional view, based on what we build and support, not the result of an independent comparison, so weigh it accordingly. Where another route is the better fit, we say so below.
Three different things people mean by "AI with Zoho"
| Route |
What it is |
Where to read about it |
| Zoho's own AI | Zia, Zia Agents, and the AI features built into Zoho apps. Zoho can also run third-party models for you through Zoho Key Service, or you can bring your own key. | The Zoho product categories, such as Zia AI, Zoho Zia Agents, and Zoho MCP. |
| An outside assistant connected to Zoho | A third-party assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT, or an AI coding tool, linked to your Zoho data through MCP or a connector, so it can read and act on your records. | This section. |
| Custom automation | AI built into your own workflows, scripts, and integrations using Zoho's APIs. | A project with us. This section covers the principles. |
These are not rivals. Many customers use Zoho's own AI for tasks inside one app and an outside assistant for work that spans several.
Why Claude is our default for an outside assistant
- It connects to Zoho through open standards. Zoho MCP, and the MCP servers for Zoho Analytics and Zoho Sites, work with Claude. Zoho Analytics even has a Claude connector that installs from the Claude Marketplace, described in Zoho Analytics MCP Server: Claude Desktop Connector Setup.
- It is one of the models Zoho itself offers. Anthropic models are among those available through Zoho Key Service, so choosing Claude does not mean leaving the Zoho ecosystem.
- There is a route for UK and EU data residency. We have written up an architecture that runs Claude on Amazon Bedrock so processing stays in the UK and EU: Model Context Protocol Architecture with Amazon Bedrock for UK/EU Data Residency.
- It is what we build and test with. Our own Zoho tooling, such as skills for auditing CRM configuration, is built on Claude, so we can support it, and we can tell you what it does and does not do.
When we would suggest something else
| Situation |
What we would usually suggest |
| The task lives inside one Zoho app, and data should not leave Zoho | Zoho's own AI. Use Zia or Zia Agents with an internal model, and set field-level controls with AI Governance. |
| The business has already standardised on another AI vendor, with contract terms in place | That vendor, connected through MCP. A tool people already have approval to use is often better than a better tool nobody may use. |
| High-volume, simple tasks where cost matters most | A smaller, cheaper model, whichever vendor it comes from. Manage Models lets you assign different models to different teams. |
| A regulatory or contractual rule that no current route meets | Do not connect an outside assistant yet. Talk to us first. |
| A specific tool or feature only another product offers | Use the tool that does the job, and keep it to that job. |
Before you connect any AI to Zoho
These points apply whichever assistant you choose.
- Know what data will leave Zoho. An outside assistant that reads your records sends that data to a third party. Check the vendor's current terms for your plan, because they differ between plans and change over time.
- Limit what it can do. Give read-only access first. Zoho separates reading data from taking actions in its newer permissions: see Give Users the Right Access with the New Zoho MCP and Zia Permissions.
- Do not assume field-level controls reach an outside connection. Zoho's AI Governance field settings do not cover MCP or other public connections, so review those connections separately.
- Try it in a test organisation. Run realistic requests there before connecting a live account.
- Decide who can use it. An assistant acting with someone's permissions can do anything that person can, so connect it only for people you would trust with that access.
- Check the result, not just the answer. AI can be confidently wrong. For anything that changes records, review what it did before relying on it.
How this section is organised
- Start Here (this article): the recommendation and the decision.
- Claude with Zoho: connecting Claude to Zoho and getting useful work out of it.
- Other AI Tools with Zoho: ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini and other third-party tools.
- Security and Data Residency: data location, access control, and cost.
Zoho's own AI features stay in their Zoho product categories, so use those for Zia, Zia Agents, Zoho MCP, and Zoho Key Service.
